Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, aside from the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
